MiniJack

A music player for the iPod touch

The iPod touch (7th generation) stops at iOS 15, and many current apps need a newer iOS. MiniJack runs on iOS 15 and later, and every screen is laid out for the 4-inch display.

Small screen

Lists are single column with large rows, keys are at least 44 points, and the layout is checked at 320 points wide with text one size larger than default. The bottom tab bar holds Home, Search, Library and Create; downloads, sources and settings sit behind one menu key.

Old hardware

Lists stay responsive on an iPod touch with 10,000 songs in the library. Artwork is decoded off the main thread and cached. Only one track ahead is buffered, so memory use stays low and no cellular data goes on songs you may skip.

Headphones and the car

The iPod touch still has a headphone jack. MiniJack handles calls, Siri and unplugged headphones the way iOS expects, and lock-screen and headphone controls work. For the car, download albums at home and play them over Bluetooth with no signal.

Where the music comes from

  • Files you add in the app or open from the Files app.
  • Songs synced to the iPod's Music app from a computer. Protected and cloud-only songs can't be played and are left out.
  • Your Subsonic-compatible server, such as Navidrome. See which servers work.

MiniJack also runs on iPhones with iOS 15 or later.
