MiniJack

A Navidrome client for iPhone and iPod touch

Add your Navidrome server to MiniJack and the whole library is on your phone in under a minute, even with 10,000 songs. Albums play gapless, and the play queue carries over between devices.

What syncs

MiniJack reads your artists, albums, songs, playlists, genres, years, stars and ratings, and keeps them on the device. Browsing and search work from that copy, so lists open at once and search works with no signal. On an iPod touch, the first sync of a 10,000-song test library took 25.7 seconds; a sync with nothing changed took under a second.

If your server has several music folders, you choose which ones MiniJack shows.

What goes back to the server

  • Stars on songs, albums and artists, and ratings from 1 to 5.
  • Plays, as scrobbles, once you have heard half a song or four minutes of it.
  • Server playlists you create, rename, reorder or edit.
  • The play queue, so it is still there after a reinstall or in another client. If a newer queue from another device replaces yours, you can restore the old one with one tap.

Plays, stars and ratings made offline wait on the device and go out when the server is reachable again, with the time they happened. Server playlists need the server: offline, an edit says so and changes nothing.

Signing in

MiniJack signs in with a salted token, so your password is never sent in the clear. If your Navidrome offers API keys, you can use a key instead of the password. The password or key is kept in the iOS Keychain.

A server on your home network can use plain http, or https with a self-signed certificate that you trust once. A server on the internet needs a certificate iOS accepts, such as one from Let's Encrypt.

Streaming and downloads

Songs play while they arrive, and seeking far ahead asks the server for that part of the file. You can set one bitrate limit for Wi-Fi and another for cellular; Navidrome then transcodes. Downloads for offline listening are checked by decoding them from start to finish before they count as ready. More on that in Offline music from your server.

Radio and mixes

Artist radio, an artist's top songs and an instant mix from a song come from Navidrome's similar-songs and top-songs data. They need Navidrome to have that data, for example from Last.fm; without it the mix says it found nothing.
